Curriculum
We have an exciting curriculum for fifth grade!
Math-We engage in three major units of study as part of the Math Common Core standards. We begin the year with a unit on Numbers in Base Ten. In winter, we will transition into Fractions, and we will end our year studying Geometry. This year we will be using Go Math as our textbook program.
ELA-We use a Reading and Writing Workshop model in our classroom to address the Literacy Common Core standards. In writing we will engage in units of study in narrative craft, research based argument essay, and research through the lens of history. We read many novels throughout the year independently, whole class, and in literature circles. We use the Words Their Way spelling program.
Science-Students are mixed among the fifth grade team for Science. The science curriculum includes Process Skills, Photosynthesis, Endangered Planet, and the Human Body. Mrs. Sherman, Mrs. Pisciotta, and Ms. Perrone teach science.
Social Studies-Students are mixed among the fifth grade team for Social Studies. The fifth grade curriculum includes Geography Skills, Canada, and Latin America. Mr. Mueller, Mrs. Boydston & Ms. Perrone teach social studies.
Classroom expectations
We work hard to prepare our students for the transition to Middle School. We teach the skills necessary for our students to become self-directed learners. Students are encouraged to persevere in their problem solving and to ask for help when they are unsure.
Snack Time
We will have snack time daily. Students should bring a small, healthy snack from home (ie-fruit, pretzels). This is meant to keep students focused on learning and should not be a meal.Celebrations
Parents are welcome to send treats to school for birthday celebrations. We will eat these treats during our daily snack time. It is best to send in store bought treats with a label that lists all ingredients so all students may enjoy the treat.Water
Students may keep water bottles on their desks throughout the day. Juice and soda are not allowed. Students can also access the building drinking stations, however they may not interrupt teaching to do so.Homework
Homework is an important extension of daily lessons. It is assigned daily and checked for completeness and accuracy. Students may begin assignments during their daily Study Skills time and are encouraged to ask for help on assignments they are unsure of before leaving for the day. Failure to turn in homework assignments on a regular basis will result in parental contact and intervention.
