Team Philosophy
-
We want all our players to be good people who develop into leaders.
Expectations of players off the court:
- Act responsible in school – It is very important to the coaching staff that all basketball players conduct themselves in an appropriate way in school. In the classroom and the halls they are representing themselves and the basketball team. We hold are players to a higher standard then the rest of the students at Arlington.
- Act responsible outside the school - No matter where they are we want them to act in the same manner we expect at school. “Your true Character is shown when no one else is looking.”
Expectations of players on the court:
- The boys Arlington Basketball team has won the sportsmanship award for 5 out of the last 7 years given out by the referees. We are extremely proud of this accomplishment and we expect this trend to continue. The players must act respectful on the floor at all times. We do not want to see trash talking to our opponents or arguing with the referees during a game. Their main responsibility is to work as hard as they can. They can not worry about these other two aspects.
- Parents also need to act in an appropriate manner. Please be positive at all times with the players. They are trying their best out there. If they miss a layup they know they did and they feel bad about they need encouragement from you to get it done next time. Other schools might allow negative comments to the refs and opposing teams we do not!! Please cheer and encourage all our players.
Communication:
- We encourage all players to come and talk to their respective coach. If they are not sure about their role or playing time we would love to discuss it with the players. They usually have a good idea of what their role is but if they are not sure about something they need to speak to us themselves. As they get older they are going to have to be their own advocates. All coaches will continue to encourage communication with the players. If a parent still wants to discuss other concerns with the coach please do not do it right after a game. It is probably not the best time to have a discussion. Call the next day and set up an appointment. We want to keep the line of communication open. Again we encourage the communication to come from the players as much as possible.
Miscellaneous:
- Our main philosophy revolves around teaching life long skills. We are hoping to help players develop as individuals as well as athletes. We are teaching them how to work hard and be successful in all they do. Usually when athletes can do this good things happen for us on the floor. The last few seasons have been quite successful for us. We have won 3 league titles in the past 4 seasons. I believe it comes from this belief of teaching players to make the right decisions in all that they do.
