What are the requirements to become a Teaching Assistant?
Any person employed, as a teaching assistant, shall hold one of the following credentials:
temporary license, continuing certificate, or a Level I, I, III or Pre-Professional certificate.
Level I Teaching Assistant Certificate (valid for 1 year, renewable for 1 year)- Hold a high school diploma or equivalent
- Pass the New York State Assessment of Teaching Assistant Skills (ATAS)
- Complete Child Abuse, Violence Prevention, and DASA training courses
Level II Teaching Assistant Certificate (valid for 3 years; not renewable)
- Complete 9 semester hours of collegiate study toward a baccalaureate degree
- Have 1 year's experience as a Level 1 TA
Level III Teaching Assistant Certificate (continuously valid if 100 hours of acceptable Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) requirements are met every 5 years)
- Complete 18 hours of collegiate study (or 9 more than Level II requirement)

How long are teaching applications kept in Human Resources?
Applications are kept on file for one year.
What are the qualifications you require for substitute teachers and what is the rate of pay?
Minimum education requirement is an Associate’s degree or 60 college credits, though NYS certification is preferred.
The rate of pay for substitute teachers is:Non-Certified Substitute Teacher: $105/day
Certified Substitute Teacher: $120/dayPlus Bonus Opportunity to be paid in July 2023:
Sub for at least 50 days = $500 bonus
Sub for at least 75 days = $750 bonus
Sub for at least 100 days = $1,000 bonus (certified substitute teachers only)I have a teaching certificate from another state. Can I apply for a teaching position in Arlington?
We are only able to accept applications from candidates who have completed all requirements for NYS certification. If you have a teaching certificate from a state with which New York has certification reciprocity, you may qualify for a Conditional Initial certificate.
