Recommendation from the Health Office

  • Deciding when children can go to school can be difficult. Sometimes it is necessary for a child to remain at home.
These are reasons to keep a sick child out of school:

    • Cough: Students with a cough that is unrelieved or continuous should remain home if it interferes with their ability or the ability of others to concentrate on school work.
    • Diarrhea: Students who have diarrhea, such as loose/watery stools, or a sick child who cannot get to the bathroom in time should remain at home until symptom free for 24 hours.
    • Fever: Students with a fever should not be sent to school and should not return to school until free of fever for 24 hours.
    • Pink or Red Eye(s): Students with red eye(s) and white, green, or yellow discharge must be excluded from school until seen by a health care provider. If there is a diagnosis of Conjunctivitis ("pink eye") and the student is given an antibiotic, the student may return to school after being on the antibiotic for 24 hours.
    • Rashes: Students with an unexplained or suspicious rash should return to school only after a health care provider has made a diagnosis and authorized the student's return to school
    • Vomiting: Students who vomit should remain at home and should not return until free of vomiting for 24 hours.

If your child contracts a contagious disease, please call the school. THere are contagious illnesses that would prevent the child from returning to school until 24 hours after treatment with antibiotics (i.e. strep throat).

On occasion, children become ill at school and there is a need for us to contact a parent or guardian to pick up their child. Please make sure that your contact information is kept up to date and current throughout the school year; you should identify individuals as backup contacts in the event that you are unable to be reached and your child needs to go home.

Your assistance in following the above is essential in reducing the spread of illness in the school community and allows the student the opportunity to recover. Please contact the school Health Office if you have any questions regarding the above.
