    At UVMS, we believe in the power of visual expression to enhance learning and problem-solving. Our art courses engage students in right-brain thinking, fostering creativity and divergent approaches to challenges. With the guidance of supportive art teachers, students develop confidence, technical skills, and a deep appreciation for the arts.

    The art department faculty members here at UVMS are Mrs. Alteri, Ms. Asendorf, Mrs. Freeswick and Mr. Rifenburg. Each faculty member is devoted to working with a range of talents and abilities so that every student can have a positive art experience.

     

    Our offerings include:

    6th & 7th Grade Art These classes allow students to continue to develop creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills in a hands-on, engaging  environment. Through exploration of various artistic techniques and mediums, students build confidence, improve fine motor skills, and learn to express themselves visually. These classes also foster patience, perseverance, and an appreciation for different perspectives, all of which contribute to overall academic and personal growth. 

     

    8th Grade Electives (HS Credited) *Applications required to sign up for these classes

    • Accelerated Studio Art – A deep dive into traditional art techniques, mediums, and foundational skills.
    • Accelerated Computer Graphics – A digital art experience using MacBooks, iPads, and industry-standard programs like Photoshop and Procreate.

    Accelerated Studio Art (earn .5 HS credit) *Application

    Accelerated Studio Art serves as the first half of the High School Studio in Art foundation course, providing students with a strong foundation in traditional art techniques. This course emphasizes hands-on creation, allowing students to explore a variety of artistic media with a primary focus on drawing and painting. Students will create diverse works, including portraits, landscapes, still life, and imaginative compositions. In addition to developing technical skills, they will engage in critiques to refine their artistic voice and maintain a notebook/sketchbook to document their creative journey. This course is ideal for students looking to build a strong artistic portfolio and continue advanced art studies in high school.

    Accelerated Computer Graphics (earn .5 HS credit) *Application

    This course is the first half of the High School Computer Graphics foundation program, introducing students to digital art and design. Using Apple Mac computers, iPads, green screens, and Adobe Photoshop, students develop skills in digital illustration, image manipulation, and creative problem-solving. Through hands-on projects, they explore key techniques in composition, visual storytelling, and graphic design, preparing for advanced high school courses.
