Tips for Success
-
You are beginning a new school year. This an excellent opportunity to implement these EIGHT SIMPLE RULES. This is also a time for making many good first impressions. Do your best, make the most of the resources the school offers and start pursuing your goals!
8 Simple Rules
- Set goals for yourself. Design a specific action plan for achieving the goals you set. (example: Goal: To make honor roll every quarter. What specific daily actions are needed to accomplish this goal? List the daily actions you will take to make this goal a reality.)
- Attend all classes and school regularly.
- Participate fully in each class, by asking and answering questions, doing your homework and preparing for all tests and quizzes. Participate in the life of the school through membership in clubs and attending activities and events.
- Be actively respectful and polite to everyone, all of the time. Be thoughtful in your words and in your actions.
- Be informed. Listen to announcements and instructions carefully. Highlight important dates on your home calendar. Share school news with your parents and keep them informed of your progress.
- Manage your time. Devote some time to study, homework, and reading every day. Create a daily schedule for these three critical elements and share that schedule with your parents.
- Seek assistance when you need it. Your counselors, teachers, and administrators are here to help. Be honest with yourself when you are dealing with a challenging issue and get the support you need.
- Give your best effort in everything that you do. Approach all things with a positive attitude and energy.
Academic Support
Don’t continue to struggle – help is available:
Have you stayed after with your teacher? If not, find out when your teacher stays after – your teacher is your best resource for extra help.- Having trouble in math? Then stop by the Math Learning Center during lunch or study hall. The MLC is open every period, every day, and is staffed by one of our math teachers. Simply ask your math teacher for a pass.
- Need help with writing a paper for ANY subject? Stop in the Writing Lab and an English teacher will help you craft that great essay!
- Sign up to receive a PEER TUTOR! Work one on one with a student who has excelled in the subject you are struggling with. You and your tutor set the date and time that you will meet. This is a free service offered through the guidance department. Ask your Guidance Counselor for more information.
- Are you unsure of how to take class notes or how to study for a test? Then go see your guidance counselor! Your counselor can assist you with study skills, test taking strategies, organization, and note-taking.
Homework Requests
If you are out for one day, have a contact person in each of your classes that you can call and find out what you have missed. Don’t wait to get back to school and have 2 nights of homework to do in 1 night. Stay current in your work.
If you are out for two days or more, contact the guidance secretary by 9am: 486-4860 x31480 to request your assignments. You will be able to pick up the assignments at the front bubble after 2:15 p.m., or you can have a neighbor or sibling bring the work home for you.
